Directions to Camp Lutherhaven

Can I come if I'm not Lutheran?
You bet! Although Lutherhaven's affiliation and confession of belief is Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Camp welcomes everybody!

Are pets allowed?
Leashed animals are allowed on camp grounds, but are not permitted in any building (except for those assisting the handicapped).

Is the fishin' good?
Darn good. Especially for them there catfish. (and panfish, bass, pike, perch , and others)

Are you ACA (American Camping Association) Certified?
No we are not, however Camp is a proud supporter of the National Lutheran Outdoors Ministry Association (NLOMA).

Are the mosquitoes bad?
Have you ever seen a 747 up close? :) Well... Actually our mosquito population really varies depending mostly on the amount of rain we get in the spring and summer. We do spray on main camp and key areas when the population warrants it. Some years you'd be fine without any bug spray at all and then there's sometimes when a good kevlar, bulletproof vest is your best defense. :) Hey, it's all part of the adventure!

Summer Camp

What is the age-range of summer campers?
Lutherhaven offers camp programs from kindergarten through High School. Developmentally disabled campers must be 18 or older.

Most camp
programs have a span of three or four grades on camp at any given time such as 1-3rd grade for Pee Wee Camp or 3-6th grade for a Youth camp.

Does grade-level mean the last grade I completed or the grade I am going into?
Grade level refers to the grade you are currently in - not going into next year.

Is clubhouse hard?
Clubhouse is more challenging than regular summer camp because it is designed to be a more rustic experience such as cooking over a fire and sleeping in the woods. However these examples and others, along with a close community that forms make for a very fulfilling week and is reason why it's one of our most popular.

What are the qualifications for kissing the moose?
The moose in the dining room of the lodge is kissed on your birthday (granted someone knows:), when you lose a tooth, if you are celebrating an anniversary, or any other "special" day determined by the staff. If an entire cabin is inducted into the Camp Lutherhaven Polar Bear Club, they may choose to force another whole cabin to pucker up.

Kissing the moose is one of Lutherhaven's fondest traditions and one that never seems to go out of style.

Are there programs for special needs individuals?
Currently we offer a four-day overnight camp and a one-day, day camp during the summer for developmentally disabled campers, 18 and older.  Please contact us for more information.

What are the requirements to apply for summer staff?
Summer
Staff should be of college age and junior servants must have completed 9th grade or older.

What happens if a camper gets sick or injured while at camp?
When a camper gets sick or injured, the parent is contacted and the child is seen by our camp medic. It is then determined if the camper is able to still participate in camp depending on issues such as if he/she is contagious, if he/she is able to participate in camp activities, checking conditions against the campers medical form, and doing what's best for the camper's condition. A decision is made and the child either is picked up by a parent or closely monitored by the camp medic.

Renting the Facilities

How early do I need to make reservations to rent the
facilities?
The earlier the better--weekends and other prime times are often reserved up to a year in advance. Weekdays are not as busy, but all dates are filled first-come-first-served. Some dates are available last minute due to cancellations. Please call for up-to-date scheduling opportunities.

What is the capacity of the Lodge/Dorm/Daniel Retreat Center, Cabins?
The private rooms in the Lodge have a capacity of 28, the Daniel Retreat Center can sleep 36, the Lodge Dormitory has two rooms that sleep 20 each for a total of 40, the eight Blue Ridge cabins each sleep 10, and the 11 rustic cabins each sleep 8.

Are groups able to cook their own food?
During the week, any group is permitted to rent the kitchens to prepare their own meals. On weekends, the pavilion kitchen is available for rental to anyone, and the Lodge kitchen is available if the group has rented ¾ of the lodge space. Prepared meals are available at anytime with a minimum of 20 people.

Is there a minimum number of people necessary to rent facilities?
Each group will be charged at least the minimum rental fee regardless of how many people attend the group's event. Minimum rentals are as follows:
Lodge private rooms = 14 people, Lodge Dormitory = 20 people, Daniel Retreat Center - 18, Cabins = none.

What kind of electronic equipment is available for rental?
TV/VCR's, an electric keyboard, overhead projector and a PA system are available for a small fee.

Are staff members available for nature lessons, devotions, challenge course facilitation, archery instruction/supervision, life guarding, etc..?
Subject to availability you may "borrow" a staff member (as long as you return them in good condition and provide them with cookies, chocolate chip preferred) for a variety of seasonal activities. For devotions, song leading, and service events, staff are available at no charge. Other activities led by Lutherhaven staff require a fee.

Are facilities rent able while summer camp is in session?
The private rooms in the Lodge and Daniel Retreat Center rooms are available weekdays during summer camp for families to rent. They are also available to groups along with cabins for a limited number of weekends during the summer.

Are there places for cooking outside?

Are outdoor campfires permitted?
Fires are permitted in designated fire-pits.

Yes, trailers and tents are permitted. Check with staff for locations.

May we shoot bottle rockets if we go down by the waterfront?
Anyone caught anywhere near camp with fireworks will be promptly escorted to the bottom of the lake (to ensure safety). No fireworks are allowed on Camp property.

Retreats

What programmed
retreats are available?
We offer weekends for Men, Women, Couples, Singles, and Families.

Is the $20 nonrefundable deposit required for all retreats part of the total or in addition to the total amount?
The $20 deposit is part of the total - not in addition to it. For example, if a retreat cost $60, the deposit would be included in that total. There are no hidden costs.

Who directs or leads the retreats?
The retreats that are publicized by Lutherhaven are always programmed and overseen by the Lutherhaven
staff. This means that even though a speaker might be present, a host might be caring for needs, or a facilitator might be leading an activity, a Lutherhaven staff person is directing the overall retreat. If you would like to become involved in helping with a retreat, please contact us! Information about a particular retreat or a speaker is available from the camp office.

Outdoor Education

Is there a discount for
outdoor education groups?
Yes, outdoor education groups receive a 15% discount on lodging, and a 10% discount on meal costs. Additionally, teachers and adult chaperones of outdoor education groups receive free meals and lodging up to a ratio of 1 for every 8 youth.

When is the best time for Outdoor Education at Lutherhaven?
May and September are our most popular months for O.E. groups, but all times of the year provide exciting opportunities for learning about the world in which we live.
