SEASONS OF LIFE - 2009 Summer Theme
- I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10b

Out in God's creation we see the profound effects of the different seasons. Spring brings new life and fulfillment of hope, summer brings about a season of growth through hot sunny days and thunderstorms. During the fall we watch as nature prepares for colder weather while displaying some of the most beautiful scenes of the year. And throughout the winter we are blessed by unique changes of scenery as snow and ice surround us and we are reminded of the hope of new life to come once again. In each season God has designed His creation to flourish.

Our life is no different as we too go through seasons of new life, growth, storms, and hope, among others. This summer we will explore the gift of abundant life that we have been given through Jesus Christ. It is a blessing to know that in every situation God has given us all that we need so we can go beyond just surviving - to living life in all its fullness as God intended.

A Typical Day

6:58--Pure, restful bliss. The sun peeks through the trees, birds begin to chirp, a slight mist hangs over Lake Muncie. The bed is warm, the stillness welcoming...

7:00--WAKE UP!!!! IT'S
POLAR BEAR TIME!!!! GET UP!!!!!!! Large numbers of campers put on their swimsuits and follow Mama and Papa Polar Bear down to the waterfront. They give their best polar bear GRRRRRROOOOOOOWLLLLLL!!!, turn to the north for the polar bear salute, and then, on cue, splash into the water for a quick dip.

8:00--First Word - what better way to start out our day but with a verse from God's Word.

8:05--Breakfast time!!! What will it be today--Pancakes? French toast? Ham & cheese croissants? Who knows, but the wonderful smells and tastes of the dining hall are something to be remembered!!

8:30--The food has been eaten, the dishes cleared, and tables washed...The dining hall is quiet as a counselor begins Breakfast Devotions. She compares all of us to flashlights--without God in our lives we are like a flashlight without batteries. With God, we are empowered and able to shine His light into the darkness of the world.

8:45--Everyone helps keep Camp Lutherhaven clean! For fifteen minutes, each cabin group cleans its own cabin, and then another area on camp. Sure it's a little work, but at camp, even work is fun!!

9:00--Time for Fun in the Son!!! The counselors take each cabin group off to Ebenezer for the large group opening complete with singing & skits.  After that, it's off to a quiet place for an interactive Bible study. We learn best by doing, so cabins may be found building sand castles to see how our Earthly lives are just temporary, or leading a blindfolded cabin-mate through an obstacle course to show how God leads us even though we have been blinded by our sins. Discussion is emphasized so campers and counselors can share their faith with each other, and learn from one another's experiences.

10:00-A great time to make friends in other cabins is during family group time! Each family group is coed, made up of two or three cabins. Every morning there are two 45 minute sessions of incredible activities! A given session may involve a nature hike to Petty Pond to see a real beaver dam and the stumps left by the beavers as they cut down trees or, it could be group building activities on the challenge course, or making crafts, or archery, or boating, or playing a rousing game of Garbage ball in the athletic field! Every day is different!

11:30-Camp is quiet except for the sound of birds in the trees. Campers and counselors alike have spread out around camp. It's power time--time for individuals to spend some time praying and reading about their Creator. An incredible opportunity for spiritual growth and for faith in our Lord Jesus Christ to take new meaning in our lives.

12:00-A busy morning has built up quite an appetite!! Good thing there is plenty of food for lunch! Even finicky eaters enjoy our wonderful meals, but of course, there is always peanut butter and jelly available!!! During cleanup time, the Nurse pops up and hands out clean cabin awards to all the deserving cabins.

12:30-Lunch is done, let's have fun, I'll bet lunch song time has come!!! Some campers say the best part of the day is lunch songs--a chance to sing fun and goofy songs at the loudest possible volume!!! Boom Boom!, The Three-Toed Tree Toad, Fried Ham, and John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt are just a few of the catchy tunes that are popular during this exiting, post-food adventure!!

1:00-After a big meal and a full morning it's time for a break. Rest period is a great chance to catch some ZZZZZs or write a letter home (or a note to that cute boy in cabin fifteen!).

2:00--Now that everyone's rested, let's play some DODGEBALL!!!!!!! For sports cabin activity each cabin gets to choose whether they will challenge another cabin to a game of ultimate frisbee, choice ball, croquet, soccer, or any of the other gazillion sports offered at camp, or head out into the woods for a hike, work on archery skills, or any other sports-related activity.

2:45--Lunch was only a couple hours ago, but hunger pains have once again started. That's OK, because it's CANTEEN TIME!!!!! What goes better on a hot summer's day than an ice cream sandwich and a pop? Maybe a candy bar and a malt cup? Good stuff and a great chance to hang out with cabin-mates or new friends from other cabins. But don't talk too long because soon it's time for...

3:15--Beach Cabin Activity!!!! WooHoo!! Time for the whole cabin to swim in beautiful Lake Muncie, or play in camp's natural bubbling spring, or maybe take out paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. A thrilling game of beach volleyball is always an option, as well as just catching some rays on the sandy beach, or climbing that big inflatable Muncie Mountain.

4:15--The joyous shouts and laughter have spread out all over camp as free time has arrived. Campers are free to choose among a multitude of supervised activities. Most head down to the beach to swim and boat, while others visit the craft room to create momentos of camp to bring home. The air-conditioned game room is a popular place for a quick game of air hockey, ping-pong, or foosball, and the archery station is available for any "Robin Hood" wannabees.

5:30--Supper time!!! Mmmm...Is that Camp's world famous Johnny Marzetti for dinner?! Everyone is chowing down when, all of a sudden, two fairies, dressed in patriotic sheets, burst in and announce that someone on camp has lost a tooth!! After locating the perpetrator, everyone sings "Happy Tooth-Loss Day" while he kisses the stuffed
moose.

6:15--Again the cabins split up as they head out for cabin activity. It could be catching frogs on the lake, making cookies for a late-night snack, or hiking up to the tree house. The opportunities are endless...up to the creativity of the counselor and campers.

7:00--All of camp gathers together around the flag pole for instructions on tonight's evening activity! It could be the traditional game of Capture the Flag, or perhaps The Great Escape, a Water Carnival, or maybe even the infamous Green Gimp Hike! Whatever the choice is for the evening, fun is sure to be had by everyone!!!!

8:15--After changing into warmer clothes and grabbing their flashlights, the cabins all congregate in the pavilion for evening canteen. Flashlights click on and off as campers gobble down their last snack before campfire devotions and bed-time.

8:45--The peace filled night has come and campers begin to calm down (we hope). A roaring fire illuminates the devotional sight known as
Ebenezer. Wonderful praise songs are sung, and the staff leads evening devotions. Just the right mix of music, humor, and meaningful skits brings the focus upon our God as we begin to end the day.

9:15--As cabin groups leave Ebenezer and head back to their cabins, mischief is in the air. A cabin of boys and a cabin of girls secretly plan strategy for their planned pillow fight.  Each cabin sneaks out to the lighted basketball court.  On their counselor's cue, the carefully supervised fluffy pounding begins and then comes to a close with both cabins ganging up on the counselors.

9:30--The pillow fight completed, everyone heads back to their cabins for cabin devotions. Each counselor leads their own devotion, be it telling of how God helped him when his grandpa died, or sharing how being accepted by God means that we don't have to worry if everyone else likes us or not. Again, discussion is encouraged and many questions are asked by both campers and counselors. One by one, cabin lights click off and the sounds of frogs and crickets can once again be heard. The day has ended and night has come...
