Treetop Village Update
This newest building addition to Lutherhaven is scheduled to be completed in time for the summer of 2009.

Construction

Construction is well under way with over 30 holes, thousands of pounds of telephone poles, concrete, 2x10's, and plywood.  See it taking shape by checking out the latest slideshow HERE.  Many volunteers, including a 34 member strong servant event, have already been hard at work on this new village, with a church group still planning to contribute to this exciting project before summer's end.

Additional news is that Lutherhaven was awarded a $26,000 matching grant from The Lutheran Foundation!  This is a phenomenal blessing that will double the gifts already received as well as provide extra incentive for those still considering and able to support this project.

The total cost for this village is estimated at $52,000.  Because of the generosity from many people already, we're about half way there.  If you would like to help support this project and help us finish it off, please send in your gift to Camp Lutherhaven, 1596 S. 150 W., Albion, IN 46701.  If you happen to be a Thrivent member, your gift could be matched twice through their Giving Plus program along with the matching grant as mentioned above. For the details on the Thrivent match, and their gift form, go to http://www.thrivent.com/fraternal/churchcommunity/givingplus.html.  For getting your gift matched through The Lutheran Foundation grant, there is nothing extra you have to do.

The Race

Raising support for this village began in 2007 with 6 months of anxious waiting and training for the 13.1 mile, mini-marathon in Indianapolis.  On  Saturday, May 3rd, 9 runners made it across the finish line on behalf of Camp Lutherhaven along with their own personal goals not to mention the peer pressure of 39,000 other runners.  Each runner was assigned to a “corral” from A to Z to begin the race.  Although the race started at 7:30 am, the last runners didn’t get to the start line until about 8:00 am.  Basically, from the air, it would look like a ribbon of solid people for almost the whole 13 miles.  For race details you can go to www.500festival.com

Thank you for all who supported the runners and therefore also the new village.  It was a huge encouragement throughout the training and race.  In all, the race campaign has brought in over $5000 with some more still trickling in.  Thank you also to all our runners, even one, who because of knee complications, had to be a "virtual" runner.   The runners include:

  • Meredith Gaines

  • Tim Jank

  • Mandy Ketcher

  • Kristy Lawrance (not shown)

  • Tim Maxson (not shown)

  • Celine Newman

  • Alli Oppenneer

  • Carl Reinking (not shown)

  • Don Schroeder

  • Peggy Schroeder

During Camp's annual Chicken Dinner back on July 20th, many others also had the chance to hear more about this special project and were given the opportunity to support it.

Tim Jank, Executive Director had this to say:
"We’re very excited about this village.  I have no doubt that it will fill up quickly in 2009 with all the fun and adventure it will bring.  What I’m really excited about is getting kids out in creation.  I believe that there is an awesomeness of God that is hard to grasp without experiencing nature first hand.  And in this day and age, kids are getting outside less and less.  Even when they do, it’s often in a controlled environment like a park.  “Camp” does this already, but this particular experience out in the forest is even more hands on with the natural world.  We’re really hoping it opens kid’s eyes up to the wonders of God and prepares their hearts to be touched by Him personally through Christ’s saving act on the cross."
